I have to admit <\/span>that I kind of \u2018fell\u2019 into the industry. <\/span>I wanted to be an actress but anyone who has ever had <\/span>that dream will know that it\u2019s a seriously tough gig with lots of knock backs and long stints <\/span>without any paid work. <\/span><\/p>\n So, I became a \u2018professional\u2019 waitress, which was fine, but apart <\/span>from the tips, the pay was pretty lousy.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n How Did it All Start?<\/strong><\/p>\n One day I was a waitress on a boat cruise and I got chatting to one of the customers.<\/span><\/p>\n It <\/span>turned out he was a producer at a key radio station in Melbourne. <\/span><\/p>\n He asked if I\u2019d ever <\/span>thought about doing voice overs<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n I had to admit the idea had crossed my mind, but I had no <\/span>clue where to begin! He very kindly offered to make me a demo.<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019ll never forget the thrill of standing in the sound booth at the radio station for the first <\/span>time. <\/span><\/p>\n I miss the days when the majority of voiceovers were recorded onsite!<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Radio Made it Easy for a While<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s funny because voiceovers actually gave me the idea to pursue a job in radio. <\/span><\/p>\n I was <\/span>fortunate to score a job at a station in Wangaratta. After a year, I moved to a bigger station <\/span>in Shepparton. <\/span><\/p>\n I spent six great years working as a copywriter, announcer, journalist, and <\/span>eventually a breakfast announcer. <\/span><\/p>\n At the time, home studios were still virtually unheard of, <\/span>so doing voiceovers was really easy because I had full access to the studio!<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n I Almost Gave it Up Altogether<\/strong><\/p>\n After I left radio for a much higher paid job in Communications, I decided I didn\u2019t want to <\/span>give up my voice over work, so I set up my very first, rather dodgy studio at home. <\/span><\/p>\n I had <\/span>also returned to Melbourne and was fortunate to be invited to come back to the radio <\/span>stations I had previously worked for, to do in-house recordings.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Fast forward to the beginning of this year and I admit my voiceover work had sadly, almost <\/span>completely dried up. <\/span>Fulltime work had got in the way and I had stopped actively marketing <\/a><\/span>myself. <\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019d also lost a bit of confidence and thought perhaps it was time to give it all <\/span>away\u2026 until some unfortunate events pushed me back into the world of voiceovers. <\/span><\/p>\n I <\/span>bought myself a new mic, improved the soundproofing in my studio, cut a new demo and <\/span>re-visited all my old contacts, and found many new ones \u2013 and I\u2019m so glad to be back!!<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Keep pushing, keep working on your craft, and don\u2019t give <\/span>up – all the hard work really is worth it!<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Inga was a radio announcer for 6 years and been a voiceover artist for over 16 years.
