Audiobook narration is the part of voice over that people fall in love with from the listening side. You’ve finished a novel on a long drive, the narrator’s voice is still in your head, and you think: I could do that. Plenty of people can. Fewer know what the work actually involves, how it pays, and what a file has to pass before Audible will sell it. This is the guide we wish someone had handed us: the market as it stands in 2026, the real hours behind a “finished hour,” the three ways narrators get paid, and a plan for the first ninety days.<\/p>\n

The market you’re walking into<\/h2>\n

Start with the good news, because there’s a lot of it. The Audio Publishers Association’s annual sales survey, published in June 2026, reported US audiobook revenue “reaching $2.43 billion in 2025, 9% over the previous year.” That’s the twelfth year running of double or high single digit growth. The same survey counted “over 750,000 active titles in 2025, a 43% increase from 2024.”<\/p>\n

Read those two numbers together. Revenue grew by a tenth; the number of titles for sale grew by nearly half. More books are being recorded than ever, which means more narration work, and it also means each title fights harder for the listener’s attention. The narrator who sounds like everyone else is competing with a lot of everyone else.<\/p>\n

And the number everyone asks about: synthetic voices. The APA’s figure for AI-narrated audiobooks was that “AI sales revenue amounted to .03% in 2025.” Three hundredths of one percent. The report notes that the number of AI-narrated titles published is rising, and it is, mostly at the very low-priced end. But when a listener spends money on a book, they are still overwhelmingly paying for a person. That’s the audience you’re recording for.<\/p>\n

What the job actually is<\/h2>\n

A “finished hour” is one hour of edited, mastered, ready-to-sell audio. Audiobook rates and schedules are quoted per finished hour (PFH), and the first thing every new narrator underestimates is how many real hours go into one.<\/p>\n

Karen Commins, a narrator who runs the training site NarratorsRoadmap, publishes a nine-step production workflow (prep, record, edit, proof, pickups, integrate the pickups, master, export, upload) and puts a number on it:<\/p>\n

Not including prep. Prep is reading the whole book before you record a word, marking every character, deciding their voices, listing every name and foreign word and looking up how it’s pronounced, and noting where the author has hidden a plot twist that changes how a line should have been read forty pages earlier. For a 90,000-word novel, which comes out around ten finished hours, that is a working week of reading and notes before the mic goes live, then sixty-odd hours of recording and post. If you do your own editing, that’s the job. If you pay an editor and proofer, you buy back roughly half of those hours and spend the money instead.<\/p>\n

The other thing nobody warns you about is stamina. Commercial voice work is thirty seconds of intensity. Narration is four to six hours a day of sustained, even, engaged reading, and the voice has to sound identical on Thursday to how it sounded on Monday because the proofer will hear the join. Where the work is<\/h2>\n

There are three doors into paid narration, and most working narrators use all three.<\/p>\n

ACX.<\/strong> Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange is where independent authors and small publishers cast and produce the majority of indie titles. Rights holders post a book with a script excerpt; narrators audition; the two agree a deal and the narrator produces the whole book to ACX’s technical standard. It’s the biggest single source of first bookings for new narrators, and its rules are public, which is why most of this guide leans on them.<\/p>\n

Publishers and studios.<\/strong> Traditional publishers cast through their own audio departments and through studios they trust. These jobs pay better, come with an engineer and a director, and go to narrators with a track record. You get there by doing good indie work first, and by having a demo that sounds like a book, not like a commercial.<\/p>\n

Direct casting.<\/strong> Authors, e-learning companies and corporate clients also cast narrators through voice over marketplaces, where a long-form job sits alongside commercials and explainers. On our own jobs board<\/a> narration briefs turn up every week, and they’re often the ones where a client wants a specific accent or a bilingual read that a general audiobook platform can’t easily find.<\/p>\n

How narrators get paid<\/h2>\n

This is where new narrators get hurt, so read it twice. ACX offers three kinds of deal.<\/p>\n

Per finished hour (PFH).<\/strong> The rights holder pays you a flat rate for each finished hour you deliver. You set your rate on your profile; they see it when they consider you. You’re paid on completion whether the book sells ten copies or ten thousand. This is the model working narrators prefer, because the risk sits with the person who owns the book.<\/p>\n

Royalty share.<\/strong> No upfront payment. ACX describes it as a deal where producers “forgo upfront payment in exchange for splitting the audiobook’s net royalties with the rights holder.” You do all the work now and get paid a share of sales for the life of the agreement, and the deal has to be exclusive to Audible, Amazon and Apple.<\/p>\n

Royalty share plus.<\/strong> A hybrid: a smaller upfront fee per finished hour plus the royalty split. ACX notes that for a royalty share plus title to qualify under the SAG-AFTRA agreement, that upfront fee has to be at least $100 per finished hour.<\/p>\n

The percentages matter because they changed this year. Under the model that ran since ACX launched, an exclusive title earned the rights holder 40% of each sale and a royalty share narrator half of that, 20%. ACX’s new royalty model, which opened to everyone on May 26, 2026, raises the exclusive rate to 50% and the narrator’s share to 25%. In ACX’s own words, on an exclusive royalty share title the rights holder “will receive 40% (legacy royalty rate) or 50% (new royalty rate)” and the producer receives “an equal share, resulting in 20% (legacy royalty rate) or 25% (new royalty rate) royalties for the producer.”<\/p>\n

Two things to know before that sounds like a raise. First, under the new model the percentage is a share of a pool built from each member’s monthly plan value and divided among every title that member engaged with, weighted by list price, rather than a straight cut of a sale. A title people buy and finish does well under it; a title people buy and abandon does worse than it used to. Second, ACX says the legacy model is discontinued at the end of 2026, and a royalty share title can’t move across without the narrator approving the new terms. The practical advice, which every experienced narrator will give you: royalty share is a bet on the book. Take it when the author already has an audience, when the genre sells in audio (romance, thrillers, self-help and business do; literary short fiction mostly doesn’t), and when you’d be happy to have done the work for the credit alone. Otherwise, quote PFH, and don’t quote a rate you’ll resent by chapter twelve.<\/p>\n

Whatever you’re paid, the file has to pass. ACX’s audio submission requirements are public and precise, and a book that fails them is sent back, which can mean re-mastering forty files. The essentials, straight from the requirements page: volume “between -23dB and -18dB RMS”; “peak levels are less than -3dB”; “noise floor is less than -60dB RMS”; MP3 at “192 kbps or higher CBR” and 44.1 kHz; between 1 and 5 seconds of room tone at the head and tail of every file; no file longer than 120 minutes; every file either mono or stereo, not a mix.<\/p>\n

The one that catches home studios is the noise floor. Minus 60 dB is quiet. A fridge two rooms away, a laptop fan, a ceiling fan on low, traffic through a single-glazed window: any of these will put you above it, and no amount of noise reduction fixes it without leaving artifacts a proofer will flag. Before you audition for anything, record thirty seconds of silence in your booth and look at the meter. ACX also asks for opening credits (title, author, narrator), closing credits ending with “The End,” and a retail sample of five minutes or less, ideally the first five minutes of the book. Take that last point seriously: those five minutes are what every browsing listener hears before they decide. Record the opening of the book last, when you know the characters, and give it everything.<\/p>\n

Auditioning for your first book<\/h2>\n

An ACX audition is a short excerpt the rights holder chooses. Most new narrators lose it before they open their mouth, for three avoidable reasons.<\/p>\n
