A booth, a character, a director, and somebody somewhere will hear your line ten million times. From the inside it’s a stranger job than that, and the part nobody warns you about is what it asks of your throat.

This is a working guide for anyone trying to get into video game voice acting: what the sessions are really made of, what the 2025 union agreement changed, how to build a reel that gets you seen, and how to get through a session without losing your voice for a week.

What the job actually is

Most people picture the lead. A named character, a story, scenes played opposite another actor. Those roles exist, and there are a small number of them.

The bulk of recorded game audio is something else entirely. A modern game might carry tens of thousands of lines, and most of them are short, functional and repeated. You’ll be cast for one of roughly five kinds of work:

Principal characters. Story roles with an arc, usually recorded over many sessions across a development cycle that can run for years.

Barks. The short combat and ambient lines that non-player characters shout. Reloading, spotting the player, calling for backup, dying. Hundreds in a row, out of context, often with only a line number for direction.

Efforts and vocalisations. Grunts, jumps, falls, exertion, pain, death. No words at all. Recorded in long sets, and the single most physically demanding thing in the room.

Systemic and narrative fill. Shopkeepers, radio chatter, announcers, tutorials, menu reads, the voice of an in-game system.

Performance capture. Full-body work on a stage in a suit, acting the scene physically while your voice is recorded at the same time. A different discipline, and increasingly where the leads are cast from.

If you want to work in games consistently, the barks and efforts are the path, not the consolation prize. They are where the volume is, and studios rebook the people who can deliver four hundred lines cleanly and still sound alive at line three hundred and ninety.

Efforts, and what they do to your voice

Here’s the part that separates games from every other genre. A commercial session asks for thirty seconds of your best tone. An efforts session can ask you to scream, strain, take impacts and die several dozen times in an afternoon.

The physical reality is not complicated. The team at Charlotte Eye Ear Nose and Throat Associates describe it simply: “When you scream, you push a large volume of air through tightly closed vocal cords.” What follows is swelling, and swelling is the thing that ruins the rest of your week, because “The increased strain causes the vocal cords to swell, making it harder for them to vibrate properly.” Do it enough and you get more than a rough day, since “Repeated or prolonged screaming can cause small injuries to the vocal cords.”

The recovery advice is equally plain, and it’s the bit actors ignore because they have another session booked. “Mild voice strain often improves within a few days with rest and proper care”, and the rest has to be real: “Avoid talking, shouting, or whispering until your voice recovers.” Whispering is on that list for a reason. It feels gentle and it isn’t.

For the day itself, the most quotable rule of thumb in voice care comes from Dr Lesley Childs, a laryngologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center: “for every 60 minutes of voice use, you need 10 minutes of voice rest.” In a games session that means asking for the break, out loud, before you need it. Directors are used to it and good ones schedule for it.

Know the warning signs too, because vocal injury in this genre is a career problem, not a bad afternoon. UT Southwestern is direct about the threshold: “If you experience a voice change such as hoarseness for two weeks or more, make an appointment to see a laryngologist.” Two other flags from the same piece are worth writing on the wall of your booth: “if you often find you have lost your voice by the end of the day or after an hour of singing, your vocal cords may be experiencing tissue damage”, and “If you feel like you have to exert a great deal of energy to produce your voice, that’s not normal.”

Practically, that turns into a short list you should be willing to say out loud on a job. Ask before the session whether efforts are on the schedule. Put them at the end, never the start. Take the break at the hour. Push from the body, not the throat, and let the engineer get the level rather than you getting louder. If a director asks for one more take of a death scream after your voice has gone, that’s the moment to say you’re done for today. Everything in our guide to looking after the only instrument you own applies here twice over.

© The Voice Realm

What the 2025 union agreement changed

Games were the front line of the argument about synthetic voices, and it ended in the longest strike the sector has seen. It’s worth knowing the outcome, because the terms now shape what a contract in front of you should say.

SAG-AFTRA members ratified the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement on 9 July 2025, ending an eleven month strike. In the union’s own words, members “approved the 2025 SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement by a vote of 95.04% to 4.96%, ratifying the deal and concluding the video game strike, which had already been suspended pending ratification.”

On money, the union states the agreement “provides compounded increases in performer compensation at a rate of 15.17% upon ratification plus additional 3% increases in November 2025, November 2026 and November 2027.”

The part that matters most for a new actor is consent. The union’s announcement says the contract “accomplishes performer safety guardrails and gains around A.I., including consent and disclosure requirements for A.I. digital replica use and the ability for performers to suspend consent for the generation of new material during a strike.”

National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland framed it as a starting position rather than a finished one: “Now that the agreement is ratified, video game performers will be able to enjoy meaningful gains and important A.I. protections, which we will continue to build on as uses of this technology settle and evolve.”

The producers’ side described the same deal as delivering “historic wage increases, industry-leading A.I. protections, and enhanced health and safety measures for performers”, in a statement from spokesperson Audrey Cooling.

Two things follow for you. First, plenty of game work is non-union, especially indie and mobile, and none of those terms apply automatically. Second, consent and disclosure language is now a normal thing to ask for, whoever you’re working with. Asking is no longer awkward.

How a session actually runs

Expect very little in advance. Games are secretive, so you’ll often sign a non-disclosure agreement before you see a page, and the page you see may be a spreadsheet of line numbers rather than a scene.

A typical session has a director and sometimes a writer or audio lead on a call. You’ll work in batches, take direction one line at a time, and record alternates for a lot of them, because the game needs variety in anything the player hears repeatedly. You’ll rarely act opposite the other performer. Most dialogue in games is recorded alone, which is why cold reading and self-direction matter more here than anywhere else.

You may be called back a year later for pickups. Match your original performance and your original setup as closely as you can. Note your mic, distance, room and energy in a file the day you record, because the studio will absolutely ask for a line that has to sit next to one you recorded in a different apartment.

The skills that get you cast

Range with control. Not funny voices. Distinct, sustainable characters you can reproduce on demand next month.

Cold reading. You’ll see the line as you record it. Speed of comprehension is a castable skill.

Physical acting. Games want effort you can hear. Moving while you record is the easiest way to make a fight sound like a fight, and it’s the reason a games booth is bigger than a commercial one.

Improv. Directors ask for another five variations of a line that’s already on the page. Being quick and playful there is what gets you rebooked.

Stamina and self-direction. Long sessions, minimal feedback, no scene partner.

Those are trainable, which is the good news. Our piece on practising properly between jobs is a decent framework, and if you’ve been wondering whether raw ability is enough on its own, the honest answer hasn’t changed.

Building a reel that games people will listen to

A games reel is not a character demo with sound effects on it. Keep it to about ninety seconds and make it read as range with intention.

Open with your strongest, most castable character. Include three or four clearly different voices, at least one grounded and realistic rather than heightened, and a short section of combat efforts, because the first thing an audio director wants to know is whether you can do them without sounding like you’re hurting yourself. Keep the production light. Games people listen for the performance and they can hear through a busy mix.

If you can get a line or two of actual shipped game audio into it, that goes first. Credits beat production value in this genre every time.

Where the work actually starts

Indie games. Small teams, real credits, and they’re casting constantly. Game jams and student projects are how most working game actors got their first three credits.

Audio directors and outsourcing studios. A lot of dialogue is cast by specialist audio houses rather than the developer. Find out who they are and be politely, specifically in touch.

Casting briefs. Character and animation work comes through the voice over jobs board alongside everything else, and the specs on game briefs tell you a lot about how a studio works before you audition.

An agent, eventually. Union principal roles mostly come through agents. That’s a later step, and the reel and the credits come first.

Before you sign anything

Read the usage and the voice data clauses on every game contract, union or not. You’re looking for what the audio can be used for, whether any of it can be used to train or generate a synthetic version of your voice, whether consent is specific and time limited, and whether you can withdraw it. If a clause is vague about future uses, ask for it to be made specific in writing. That request is standard practice now, and it’s the single most valuable habit you can build early.

Games are a long game. The first credits are small, the sessions are strange, and nobody gets a lead in year one. What gets you there is a voice you can still use in ten years, a reel that shows range rather than volume, and the kind of professionalism that makes an audio director think of you the next time a project needs four hundred barks by Friday.

Sources: SAG-AFTRA, “SAG-AFTRA Members Approve 2025 Video Game Agreement”, 9 July 2025, including statements by Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and Audrey Cooling; Charlotte Eye Ear Nose and Throat Associates, “Voice Pain from Screaming: Your Treatment Options”; UT Southwestern Medical Center, “3 signs your vocal cords may be damaged”, quoting Dr Lesley Childs.
