If that’s what happens when you sit down to record an audition, you’re in very good company. Plenty of working voice actors still feel it, years in. This guide is for anyone starting out, or anyone who’s been at it a while and still dreads the record button. It covers what nerves actually do to your voice, why the usual advice to “just relax” tends to backfire, and the small, practical things that turn all that energy into a better read.

What nerves do to a voice

Performance anxiety isn’t only about stages. Cleveland Clinic describes it as “outsized feelings of fear, nervousness and dread that surround completing specific tasks”, and an audition is exactly that kind of task. You’re being judged, there’s something you want, and you only get one file to make your case.

The clinic’s list of physical symptoms reads like a description of a bad audition. Your heart rate goes up. “Your hands, legs and voice can shake.” Your muscles tense. You feel short of breath. “Your mouth may feel dry.” Every one of those ends up in the recording. A tight neck makes the voice thinner and higher. Shallow breath cuts phrases short. A dry mouth adds clicks. A racing heart speeds up the read until the copy sounds like it’s being rushed out of the room.

Theresa Callard-Moore, PhD, a licensed independent social worker interviewed by the clinic, explains why it bites hardest when the stakes feel high: “Think about any time you’re trying to do something well… These are all good things. But performance anxiety amps up the volume on all that and can be paralyzing.”

That’s worth sitting with for a second. The nerves come from caring. You want the job, you want to do the script justice, you want to be good. None of that is a problem. It’s just turned up too loud.

© The Voice Realm

Why “just relax” doesn’t work

The instinct, when your heart’s pounding, is to try to calm down. Deep breath, slow down, relax. It’s what friends tell you and what you tell yourself. Research from Harvard Business School suggests it might be the harder road.

Alison Wood Brooks, PhD, ran a set of experiments published in the American Psychological Association’s Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. As she put it in the APA’s release, “Anxiety is incredibly pervasive. People have a very strong intuition that trying to calm down is the best way to cope with their anxiety, but that can be very difficult and ineffective.”

Her point is that anxiety and excitement feel almost the same in the body. Both come with a fast heartbeat and a rush of energy. Going from that state all the way down to calm is a big jump. Going sideways, from anxious to excited, is a small one. In one of her studies, people preparing a persuasive speech were told to say either “I am excited” or “I am calm” before they began. The ones who said they were excited gave longer speeches and were rated by independent evaluators as more persuasive, competent and relaxed.

Her explanation is the part every voice actor should hear: “When people feel anxious and try to calm down, they are thinking about all the things that could go badly. When they are excited, they are thinking about how things could go well.”

The study also put people in front of a karaoke game, which is about as close to a home audition as a psychology lab gets: a microphone, a song, and a machine scoring you on pitch, rhythm and volume.

© The Voice Realm

Say it out loud before you press record

The practical version is almost embarrassingly simple. Before you record, say out loud, “I’m excited.” Not in your head. Out loud, at the mic, the way you’d say it to a friend.

It’ll feel silly. Brooks says that doesn’t matter: “Even if they don’t believe it at first, saying ‘I’m excited’ out loud increases authentic feelings of excitement.” The words give your brain a different label for the same heartbeat, and that label changes where your attention goes.

“The way we talk about our feelings has a strong influence on how we actually feel.”

Alison Wood Brooks, PhD, Harvard Business School

You can take it further. Look at the script and find what’s genuinely exciting about it. A kids’ brand that’s fun to play with. A documentary on something you didn’t know. A character with a great line in the second paragraph. Then point the energy at that. Nerves are about you being judged. Excitement is about the copy, and copy is where your attention belongs.

A small reframe on the physical side helps too. When you notice your heart going, tell yourself that’s your body getting ready to perform. Because it is. That extra energy is the same thing that makes a read sound alive rather than flat. The goal isn’t to get rid of it. It’s to aim it.

© The Voice Realm

Shake it out of your body first

Words help your head. Your body needs something too, because a tense body makes a tense voice no matter what you’re telling yourself. Cleveland Clinic’s article offers a handful of ways to, in Callard-Moore’s words, “discharge the tension”. They work well in a home studio because none of them need anything but a few square feet of floor.

Move. A quick walk round the block or a minute of jumping jacks burns off the adrenaline that’s making your hands shake. If you’ve got a big audition due, walk first and record straight after.

Shake it off, literally. The clinic suggests giving your whole body “a big wiggle” and adds, “It’s a signal to your body that you’re safe.” Arms, shoulders, hands, jaw. You’ll feel ridiculous, and that helps too. It’s very hard to stay tense while you’re laughing at yourself.

The butterfly hug. Cross your arms over your chest, hands just below your collarbones, and tap left, right, left, right, slowly, for a few minutes. It’s quiet enough to do in a booth.

Breathe low. The clinic recommends deep diaphragm breaths, box breathing or 4-7-8 breathing. Voice actors have an advantage here, because this is the same low breath you use for the work itself. If you haven’t built that habit yet, our guide to where the air goes before the words walks through it.

Then do your normal warm-up. A tense voice needs a few minutes of humming and lip trills before it’ll do anything subtle, and a familiar routine is calming in its own right. Our five minute warm-up is short enough to do before every audition.

© The Voice Realm

Fix what the nerves do to the sound

Even with your head and body in a better place, some of it may still leak into the read. These are the usual suspects and what to do about each.

Dry mouth. Keep room temperature water within reach and sip before each take, not just before the session. A dry mouth clicks, and clicks get worse the more you notice them.

A wobble in the voice. It almost always comes from shallow breath. Take a slightly bigger breath than you think you need before the first line, and let the first word ride on the out breath rather than pushing it.

Rushing. Nerves speed everyone up. Mark a few deliberate pauses in the script with a slash, and honour them even when they feel too long. They won’t sound too long on playback.

Pitch creeping up. A tight throat lifts the voice. Before you start, sigh out on a low, easy “huh” and let your first line start from that spot.

Over-reading. Nervous actors often push, adding emphasis to every second word to prove they can act. Pick the one word in each sentence that really matters and let the rest be plain.

© The Voice Realm

Make auditions ordinary

The single best long-term cure for audition nerves is doing a lot of auditions. Every time you send one off and the world doesn’t end, your brain files it under “normal”. The tenth audition this week matters less than the only one you’ve sent this month, and it sounds like it.

Build a routine and run it the same way every time. Read the brief and the script once silently. Read it out loud once, unrecorded. Mark it up. Water, warm-up, “I’m excited”. Record two or three takes, pick the best, send it, and then close the tab. Routines take decisions away, and fewer decisions means less to worry about.

Practise reading new copy cold, too. If the first read of a script is the one that scares you most, make first reads boring by doing lots of them. Our piece on cold reading a script has drills for exactly that. And if you’re new and want structured feedback while you build those habits, a course like Voice Master Academy gives you a safe place to get the early mistakes out of the way.

Last, let each audition go the moment you’ve sent it. Don’t refresh your inbox. Don’t replay it. The best casting habit you can build is to send your best take, then start the next one. There’s always another script waiting on the voice over jobs board.

When it’s more than nerves

A bit of adrenaline before an audition is normal, and most of the time the tricks above are enough. But if the fear is stopping you from sending auditions at all, or it’s spilling into the rest of your life, it’s worth talking to someone. Cleveland Clinic’s advice is clear: “If anxiety is affecting your self-confidence, your ability to do your job or go about your day-to-day life, talking with a mental health professional can help.”

There’s no shame in it. Plenty of performers work with someone on exactly this, and it’s a much shorter road than trying to tough it out alone. Your voice is worth looking after, and so are you.

Sources: “What Is Performance Anxiety?
