This one is about a conference. In early October, a university conference centre in Warwick hosted three days given over to nothing but audiobook narration. If you are a British voiceover artist who has ever wondered whether audiobook narration is a proper craft with a proper community behind it, the programme is worth a few minutes of your time.

This piece is for working narrators, for voiceover artists who are curious about the work, and for publishers and producers who book them. We were not there, so we will stick to what the organisers have published and what we make of it.

Three days in Warwick, built by narrators

The second Audiobook Narration UK Conference took place at Warwick University Conference Centre from 1 to 3 October 2026. The organisers describe it on their ticketing page as “Three full days of community, learning, support and exploration of the skills, art and craft of audiobook narration.”

The people behind it are working narrators. Audiobook Narration UK Ltd was set up by Esther Wane, Ana Clements and Helen Lloyd, and the organisers say they hosted the first in-person UK conference dedicated solely to the art, craft and business of audiobook narration in October 2025. That makes this year’s event the second, and the sort of repeat that tells you something. A one-off can be a gamble. A second year means the first one worked.

Note who runs it. It is not a platform, a publisher or a software company with something to sell. It is narrators, coaching and organising for other narrators. That shapes everything about the programme.

© The Voice Realm

Why a craft conference is a good sign

Voice work has plenty of events about gear, marketing and the business of getting hired. A conference given over to the craft itself is rarer. It says the people in the room believe narration is worth getting better at slowly, in person, with other people watching.

It also says something about the work. A good audiobook is hours of a single voice holding a listener’s attention without any pictures, music or cuts to rescue it. The skill is part acting, part stamina and part editing, and most of it cannot be learned from a video. You learn it by reading aloud to someone who will tell you the truth.

Compare it with a thirty second radio ad. In a spot, a voice has half a minute to be charming and then it is gone. In a book, the same voice has to stay interesting through chapter after chapter, while the listener is washing up, driving to Leeds or lying awake at two in the morning. Energy has to be rationed. Characters have to stay put. A tired read in hour six sounds nothing like a fresh read in hour one, and the listener notices even when they cannot say why.

For listeners, that care shows up as a book you forget you are listening to. For artists, it shows up as repeat bookings. People who care about craft tend to be the ones publishers ask for again.

© The Voice Realm

Who was in the room

The programme page lists the organising team and a set of guests. What stands out is the mix. There are accent and voice specialists from two of the country’s drama and music institutions. There are audio producers and directors. And there is a casting team from W.F. Howes.

That last detail is the one we would underline. Narrators, directors and casting people in the same building is how work actually gets made. A narrator who has read for a director in a workshop is not a stranger when the casting email arrives. A casting team that has watched someone handle a dialect on the day has an idea of what they can do beyond the demo.

The coaching names are equally telling. Accent work gets real attention in audiobooks, because a book can ask one person to voice a Glaswegian grandmother, a Cornish fisherman and a Home Counties vicar in the space of a single chapter. If you have ever stumbled on that, our piece on learning an accent from the vowels up is a good place to begin.

Craft is the part you control

Most things about a voiceover career are out of your hands. Who is casting, how many people audition, whether a client changes direction. Craft is the exception. It is the one area where more hours produce a better result, and where nobody can take that improvement away.

It helps to see that the two halves of narration work look very different, and that you can train for each.

Before the mic

The preparation

Reading the whole book first, deciding how each character sounds, marking breaths and pauses, checking names and places. Nobody hears this part, and it decides how the rest goes.

At the mic

The performance

Staying in the story for hours, keeping a character the same on page 300 as on page 3, listening back, and fixing the line you rushed. This is where the preparation either pays off or does not.

Stamina belongs on that list too, and it is the part people forget to train. Reading aloud for a few hours is physically tiring: the throat dries, the mouth gets lazy and the pace creeps up without you noticing. Water, regular breaks and a habit of listening back to the first minute of each session all help. None of it is glamorous, and all of it is what separates a narrator who finishes a book cleanly from one who spends the last week patching.

If you are weighing up where to put your effort, start with the first column. It is cheap, it is private and it is entirely yours. We cover the full route in our working guide to becoming an audiobook narrator.

© The Voice Realm

If you missed it, build the room at home

Not everyone can take three days out, and a conference is not the only way to practise. Much of what makes a room like that useful can be copied at home with a little organisation.

First, find your people. Narrators are generally generous. Find two or three others at your level, trade a recording a week and say what you honestly heard. It is awkward for the first fortnight and enormously useful afterwards.

Second, record a chapter badly on purpose. Pick a page from a novel you have not read, record it cold, then record it again after a proper prep pass. The gap between the two is the most convincing argument for preparation you will ever hear, and it is in your own voice.

Third, give your quiet space a go. A duvet over a clothes airer is a respectable booth, and plenty of working narrators began that way. Treat it as a rehearsal room first and a recording room second.

© The Voice Realm

Mark up the page before you record

The single most practical habit a narrator can build is annotating the script. We mean actual marks, in pencil, on the page. It slows you down at first and speeds you up for the rest of the book.

A marked page is a record of decisions. You decide once where a character lowers their voice, where the sentence needs to breathe, how a difficult name is pronounced, and you never have to decide it again. That consistency is what a listener hears as a steady, trustworthy voice, and it is what a director hears as someone who will not need ten retakes.

Read the whole thing first. It sounds obvious, and it is the step most often skipped when a deadline is close. A twist on page 200 can change how a character should sound on page 20, and you want to find that out with a pencil in your hand rather than halfway through a recording session. Make a list of every name, every place and every foreign word, and settle how you will say each one before you press record.

Keep your own system and keep it simple. The best marking scheme is the one you can read at a glance in the middle of a take.

Where this leaves clients

If you commission audiobooks, or any long-form audio, the practical point is that craft takes time and shows. When you are choosing a narrator, listen to a sample of something long, not just a sixty second spot. Ask how they prepare. Ask about accents the book needs. A narrator who talks happily about marking up a script is usually one who will turn in clean files.

When you are ready to look, our directory has voices for audiobooks you can hear before you decide. And if you are new to the process and want to know how a booking works, our page on getting started online explains the route from both sides.

© The Voice Realm

Our take

We think the conference matters for a simple reason: it shows narrators organising themselves. Nobody handed them a room. They built it, ran it a second time, and the programme lists coaches, directors and a casting team alongside them. That is what a profession that takes itself seriously looks like.

For a voiceover artist in Britain, the message is encouraging and a little demanding. Encouraging, because there is a real community and a real route in. Demanding, because it is built on craft, and craft cannot be bought. You get it by reading aloud, listening back and caring about the page.

Our advice is to pick one thing from this piece and do it this week. Mark up a page. Find a reading partner. Record a chapter cold and then warm. Whatever you choose, do it in your own accent first, because the country is full of listeners who want to hear that. If you want to see how British accents and voices are presented to clients, take a look at British voices for audio and ads.

And if you were in Warwick, we would love to hear what you took home.

Sources: Audiobook Narration UK, “2026 Audiobook Narration UK Conference” (programme, team and guests); Ticket Tailor, “Audiobook Narration UK 2026” (event description).

Three days in Warwick, run by working narrators.
