It Moved Into Promos and Games

Say “in a world” in your deepest voice. Go on. Everyone can do it, and that’s exactly why most trailer reads that start there don’t book. The cinema narrator who told you the whole plot over a wall of thunder has mostly left the building. The work hasn’t. It moved into TV spots, streaming promos, game reveals and the trailers people watch on their phones on the bus.

This guide is for voice actors who want trailer and promo work, or who keep seeing “make it epic” in a brief and aren’t sure what that means now. It covers where the work lives, the two reads you’ll be asked for, how to mark a trailer script against the music, how to go low without hurting yourself, and what belongs on a trailer demo.

The voice everyone can impersonate

The style has a founder. Don LaFontaine was an advertising copywriter before he was a voice. The Christian Science Monitor reported in 2001 that he filled in for an absent actor one night on the trailer for “Gunfighters at Casa Grande” and floored the producers. He went on to rule trailer narration for decades, and when he died in 2008, NPR said his baritone had been “heard on ads, TV promos and some 5,000 trailers over three decades.”

He never thought of it as one voice, either. “There are various pitches and timbres that I use in my voice, depending upon what I’m selling,” he told the Monitor. “If it’s a hard-core action picture, it’s what I call the ‘chain-saw voice.'”

Here’s a detail worth sitting with. In its tribute that week, NPR played a clip it believed was LaFontaine. It was another trailer veteran, Hal Douglas, and the network set the record straight on air a few days later. If a national broadcaster couldn’t always tell the giants of the genre apart, an impression of the genre won’t make you stand out. That’s the trap. The sound is so familiar that copying it makes you sound like everybody, and casting is looking for somebody.

© The Voice Realm

Why the cinema narrator went quiet

In 2012, Salon asked trailer editors what had changed. The first answer was the move from narration to title cards. Editor Jim Hale of Fishbowl Films gave the practical reason: “It’s easier for us to cut with graphics because we don’t have to rely on a narrator.”

He also put his finger on why some genres dropped the voice first. “The words you use on a horror trailer like ‘terrifying’ and ‘shocking’ can sound a little cheesy when read,” he said. Read that again if you’re preparing a horror audition. The adjectives are the danger zone. The scarier the word, the less you need to push it.

Editing on computers sped everything else up. Shots got shorter, cuts got faster, and music and sound design started doing the storytelling a narrator used to do.

But the same article made a point that’s easy to miss. Voice actors, it said, “are still used for some trailers, and are almost always used for TV spots, where the audience can’t be expected to pay as much attention.” A cinema crowd sits in the dark staring at the screen. Someone at home is half watching and half scrolling. A voice is the thing that reaches them from across the room.

© The Voice Realm

TV spots and promos still need a voice

Think of “trailer voice” as a family of jobs rather than one. TV spots for films and series are the obvious one: short cutdowns that run in ad breaks, often in several lengths made from the same session. You might record a thirty second version, a fifteen and a pile of single lines the editor can drop wherever they fit.

Network and streaming promos are the other big branch. They tell viewers what’s on tonight, what’s new this week, what’s coming next month. A channel often keeps the same promo voice for a long stretch, because the voice becomes part of how the channel sounds. That makes promo work less about one dazzling read and more about being consistent, quick and reliable, session after session.

Promo copy changes fast, too. A show moves to a different night, a date shifts, a title gets a subtitle. Being the voice who can turn round three new tags before lunch, sounding exactly like last week, is a real skill and a real reason producers keep calling you back.

© The Voice Realm

Game reveals, book trailers and the Epic Voice Guy

Video game trailers and reveal videos are a growing slice. Some lean on a narrator, some on a character speaking from inside the game’s world, and plenty premiere at live shows and streams where the voice has to cut through a noisy hall and a chat scrolling at full speed. If you play the games you audition for, you’ll hear the difference between a world that wants a storyteller and one that wants a character talking straight to the player.

Then there’s everything else that borrows the trailer sound: book trailers, conference openers, sports packages, product launches, a podcast’s season teaser. None of these clients needs the voice of the gods. They need their thing to feel like an event for sixty seconds.

And there’s comedy. Jon Bailey became known as the “Epic Voice Guy” on the YouTube series Honest Trailers, which lovingly parodies the genre. What kept him busy wasn’t one sound. “Once they realized I didn’t have a singular sound and could do more than just one thing, they realized we could do horror, we could do family, we could do romantic comedy!” he told the Christian Science Monitor in 2016. Even parody asks you to know the real thing well enough to play with it.

© The Voice Realm

Big read or real read? Find out which one they want

Most trailer and promo briefs want one of two reads, and the words on the page don’t always tell you which. A fantasy epic and a family comedy can both open with “This summer.” What changes is who’s speaking and who they’re speaking to.

The big read

Announce the event

Low, unhurried and weighty. Lines land on the music with air around them, and every word carries. You’re the voice above the story. Think blockbusters, epic fantasy, a game reveal on a stage.

The real read

Tell a friend about it

Closer to the mic, lighter and quicker. You sound like someone who’s seen the show and can’t wait for you to see it. Think comedies, family films, streaming drama promos and most TV spots now.

When the brief is vague, look at what the client links to, or ask which trailers they love. If the audition allows a second take, give them one of each and say so in your slate notes. More often than not, the take that sounds like a person wins, even on a big film, because a person is easier to believe than a narrator.

Either way, it’s still acting. Decide who you’re talking to and why they need to hear this right now. “Coming this Friday” means something different said to a fan who’s waited three years and to someone who’s never heard of the film.

Read the music, not just the words

Trailer copy is short. There may be only four or five lines in a thirty second spot, and each one sits in a gap between a music hit, a burst of dialogue from the film and the next cut. If you get the cut or a temp track, listen to it several times before you read a word.

Mark your script for the music. Put a slash where a hit lands and you need to be silent, a small arrow where a line should ride up into the next beat, and a box round the title. Leave real space before and after each line so the editor can slide it a few frames either way. A line that’s crammed against the next one is a line they can’t use.

The title deserves its own moment. A beat of silence before it, then say it like the name of someone who matters to you. The date line, “In cinemas Friday” or “Streaming November third”, is the line most likely to change, so expect to record it several ways and keep each version identical in tone. If you’re asked for a line at a set length, our guide to how many words fit in thirty seconds will help you plan the pace before you start.

Here’s an invented spot, frame by frame, to show how little the voice actually says and where it lives.

© The Voice Realm

Go low without pushing

The big read tempts everyone to dig for a deeper voice than they’ve got. Don’t. Pressing your voice down into your chest to sound bigger is how you end a session tired and husky, and it rarely sounds as low as it feels. Your own relaxed bottom notes, on a full breath, will sound richer than a forced growl.

Let the microphone help. Move a little closer for the intimate lines and the low end gets warmer on its own, then ease back for anything loud so it doesn’t boom or distort. Our guide to working the distance and angle at the mic covers how to do that without wrecking your levels.

And remember that big doesn’t mean loud. The Monitor noted that LaFontaine claimed, with no false modesty, that his voice could be heard as a whisper over a scene of the earth exploding. The weight in a great trailer read comes from intention and space, not volume. If your throat aches afterwards, you were pushing. Warm up properly before a promo session, keep water nearby and take a break when your voice starts to fray.

Practise on trailers that already exist

The best practice material is all over the internet. Pick a trailer you like, turn the sound off and write your own narration for it: an opening line, a turn, the title, a date. Then record it to picture, playing the video and speaking into the gaps. You’ll learn faster than with any script because the edit tells you exactly how much room you have.

Work across genres. Do the same exercise on a horror trailer, a romantic comedy, a game reveal and a nature documentary. Then take one line and record it in three lengths, say four seconds, three and two, without it sounding rushed. That’s a task you’ll be asked to do for real.

Practise reading cold, too. The Monitor wrote that LaFontaine often recorded without practice, relying on expert sight reading. Promo sessions move quickly and new copy arrives mid-session, so the more comfortable you are with reading a script you’ve never seen, the calmer you’ll be when the producer says “we’ve got a new tag, give us three.”

A trailer demo that sounds like now

A trailer and promo demo should be short and sound like real spots, cut with music and effects, because that’s how a producer will picture you. Lead with the read you’re most likely to book, which for most voices is the real one. Show range across genres rather than ten versions of doom.

Please don’t open with “In a world.” Producers have heard it from a thousand impressionists. Open with something that sounds like it could air next week: a streaming promo, a game reveal, a TV spot for a comedy. If you do a great big read, put it second, where it can surprise them.

Once the demo’s done, use it. Keep an eye on our voice over jobs board for promo and trailer style castings. Auditioning for them is the quickest way to find out which of your reads people actually hire.

The trailer voice was never really one voice. It was a performer who knew exactly what they were selling and who they were selling it to. Learn that, and the deep end takes care of itself.

Sources: NPR, “King Of Voiceovers Don LaFontaine Dies”; NPR, “Voiceover Mix-Up: Who’s Who In Movie Trailers”; The Christian Science Monitor, “That familiar voice in the dark”; Salon, “The movie trailer revolution”; The Christian Science Monitor, “Voice-over actor finds online fame skewering film trailers”.

Where trailer and promo voice work lives now, the big read and the real read, and how to mark, practise and demo a trailer script that books.

[235,504
812,808,810,809,811,74
post-6769","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-voice-acting-voice-actor-2","category-voice-over-tips","tag-game-trailer-narration","tag-movie-trailer-voice-over","tag-promo-voice-over","tag-trailer-voice","tag-tv-promo-voice","tag-voice-acting

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"BlogPosting","@id":"https://www.thevoicerealm.com/blog/movie-trailer-voice-over/#blogposting","name":"Movie Trailer Voice Over: How the Read Works Now – The Voice Realm","headline":"The Trailer Voice Didn’t Die.
