Eating Before a Voice Over Session

You’ve got a session at two. It’s half past eleven, you’re hungry, and somebody once told you milk ruins your voice, coffee dries you out and a green apple fixes everything. So what do you actually eat? This guide is for voice actors who want a plain answer about food and drink on recording day, with the myths sorted from the things that really do show up on the mic.

The short version: very little you swallow changes your vocal folds directly. What changes is your mouth, your stomach and how much water your body has to work with. Get those three right and lunch stops being a gamble.

Nothing you swallow touches your vocal folds

This one surprises people. When you swallow, a small flap called the epiglottis closes over your airway and food and drink head down the oesophagus, behind the voice box. If anything did land on your vocal folds, you’d know about it, because you’d be coughing.

Lesley Childs, a laryngologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Voice Center and a singer herself, puts it bluntly: “Liquids you consume will never touch your vocal cords.” Warm drinks can soothe a scratchy throat and help you feel better, she writes, but they won’t coat or cure anything down there.

So why does food matter at all? Three reasons, and they’re the ones to plan around:

Your mouth. Sticky saliva, a dry tongue and sugary film all turn into clicks and smacks the microphone hears.

Your stomach. A heavy meal can push acid upward, and a growling empty stomach is a noise in its own right.

Your water level. Your folds stay moist from the inside, through the body, which takes hours, not minutes.

We’ve written about that last one at length in our piece on what water really does for your voice, so here we’ll stick to the plate and the cup.

© The Voice Realm

The milk myth was tested with a box of tissues

Ask ten singers what to avoid before a performance and most will say dairy. The belief is that milk makes mucus. It’s a reasonable guess, because milk does leave your mouth feeling coated. It just doesn’t hold up when someone measures it.

In 1990 a team at the University of Adelaide gave adult volunteers a common cold virus on purpose, recorded every glass of milk they drank over ten days, and weighed every used tissue. Their conclusion was that “no statistically significant overall association can be detected between milk and dairy product intake and symptoms of mucus production in healthy adults.” The twist was in the people who already believed milk made mucus: they reported more cough and congestion, but their tissues weighed the same.

A later review from the University Hospital in Zurich found the same pattern and explained the feeling. People did notice changes in their mouth and throat after milk, but “these effects were not specific to cows’ milk because the soy-based milk drink with similar sensory characteristics produced the same changes.” In other words, it’s the texture. A thick, creamy drink leaves a film you can feel, and you read that film as phlegm.

For a voice actor, that’s actually useful. If a latte before a session leaves your mouth feeling furry, the fix isn’t swearing off dairy for life. Have it earlier, rinse with plain water, and give your mouth ten minutes to clear. If you’ve got a genuine milk allergy or intolerance, that’s a different story and you already know your own rules.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6903" class="voh-infographic aligncenter size-full wp-image-6903" src="https://www.thevoicerealm.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/a-notebook.png" alt="Graphic styled as a lab notebook page called Does milk really make mucus? Adelaide, 1990: 51 volunteers given a cold, 10 days each, milk 0 to 11 glasses a day, mucus 0 to 30.4 g a day, link found none. Before the trial 27.5% cut back on dairy with a cold or called it bad for colds, and 80% of those blamed more mucus. Zurich review, 2005: a soy drink with the same creamy feel did exactly the same. A creamy drink coats, it doesn't clog: rinse, wait ten minutes, record. The logic is simple: caffeine makes you pee more, so you lose water, so your voice suffers.

When researchers at Trinity College Dublin went looking for proof, they found surprisingly little. Their systematic review pulled together every experiment they could find on caffeine and the healthy voice, coffee and tablets alike, measuring sound, airflow and how people felt about their own voices. The headline finding: “No measures were adversely affected by caffeine consumption.”

Before you pour a third cup, though, read their caveat too. The authors say the evidence “is deemed unreliable and no firm conclusions can be elicited to guide clinical practice,” because there just aren’t enough good studies yet. And plenty of clinicians still play it safe. Dr. Childs recommends voice users “choose warm (not piping hot) caffeine-free teas because caffeine can be dehydrating.”

Here’s a sensible middle path:

If you drink coffee every day, have your usual. Recording day is the worst day to start a caffeine headache.

Drink a glass of water alongside it, and keep sipping through the session.

Skip the extra shot you wouldn’t normally have. Jittery hands and a racing read help nobody.

If you notice more clicks after coffee, that’s your answer, whatever the studies say. Our guide to stopping clicks and sticky saliva has the full toolkit.

© The Voice Realm

Eat a real meal, early and plain

The most common food mistake on recording day isn’t a particular ingredient. It’s timing. Either people skip lunch and their stomach narrates the second half of the script, or they eat a huge, rich meal twenty minutes before the booth and spend the session fighting burps and a tight throat.

Aim for an ordinary, filling meal two to three hours before you record. Think rice, potatoes, bread, eggs, chicken, fish, vegetables, nothing swimming in oil or sauce. That gives your stomach time to settle and keeps your energy steady through a long read. If the session runs past a mealtime, a small snack an hour before is fine.

Why low fat? Rich, fatty food is one of the classic triggers for reflux, and acid that creeps up toward the throat is bad news for anyone who talks for a living. A 2025 systematic review in the Journal of Voice, led by Jerome Lechien of the University of Mons, looked at diet as a treatment for throat reflux and found that the diets being tested were mostly low in fat, low in caffeine and free of alcohol. Across the studies, sticking to a diet like that brought significant relief, and the review concluded that a low-fat, high-protein, alkaline diet “may appear as an effective single or combined treatment” alongside medication. If you’re forever clearing your throat in the mornings, our article on silent reflux and the voice is worth ten minutes of your time.

© The Voice Realm

Green apples, pastilles and the kit by the mic

Now for the folk wisdom. Plenty of voice actors keep sliced green apple in the booth and swear it cuts mouth clicks. Nobody has run a proper trial on it, so treat it as a trick to test, not a law. The idea is that a crisp, slightly tart apple gets saliva flowing and clears sticky film from the tongue. Many people find it works. Some find the sugar makes things worse after a while. Try it on a practice read and listen back with headphones before you trust it on a paid job.

Throat drops are where the evidence is clearer, and the type matters. Dr. Childs says her team has recommended glycerin-based pastilles for professional voice users for years: “Glycerin-based throat drops also increase oral moisture, preventing dry mouth and reducing the urge to clear and cough.” The ones to leave in the drawer are the cooling, minty kind. “Avoid using menthol-based lozenges, which can dry the mouth, irritating the throat tissues and cause you to reach for more drops.”

A good booth kit, then, is small. A bottle of water at room temperature. A few glycerin pastilles. An apple if it works for you. Tissues. That’s it. Anything you’d need a plate for belongs outside.

Alcohol, fizz and spice: what to leave for after

Some things don’t need a study to rule out on the day. Others do, and the studies agree.

Four to save for after the session

Alcohol. It’s drying, it loosens your diction before you notice, and alcohol-free was one of the most common rules in the reflux diets Lechien’s review looked at. Last night’s big one counts too.

Fizzy drinks. Bubbles mean burps, and a swallowed burp mid-line tightens your throat and wrecks the take.

Spicy, acidic and fried food. Lovely for dinner, risky for anyone who gets reflux, and the heat can leave your mouth dry for a while afterwards.

Anything brand new. Session day isn’t the day to try the chilli place or a strange supplement. Eat what you know your body handles.

None of this means living like a monk. It means keeping the fun stuff for the evening after the files are delivered, not the lunch before the booth.

Build your own session menu

The honest truth about food and the voice is that people differ a lot. One actor can drink a flat white and sound buttery; another clicks like a metronome after the same cup. General rules get you most of the way. Your own notes get you the rest.

For the next few sessions, jot down what you ate and drank and when, then listen back to the first ten minutes of raw audio. Note the clicks, the throat clearing, how your voice felt by the end. After three or four sessions you’ll see your own pattern, and it’ll be more reliable than anything you read here, including this.

Pair the food routine with a short warm-up and you’ve got a pre-session ritual you can repeat on autopilot. Our five-minute vocal warm-up slots neatly between the last sip of water and the first take.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6906" class="voh-infographic aligncenter size-full wp-image-6906" src="https://www.thevoicerealm.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/a-menu.png" alt="Graphic styled as a cafe chalkboard called Session Day Specials. 3 hours before: the plain plate, rice or potatoes, chicken, fish or eggs, greens, low fat, normal portion, nothing new. 1 hour before: your usual coffee if it's your habit with a full glass of water, no bonus shot. 15 minutes before: rinse with plain water, creamy drinks finished. In the booth: room temperature water, a glycerin pastille, apple slices if they work for you. Those can be signs of reflux or something else worth checking, and a laryngologist can look at your vocal folds directly instead of guessing.

For everyone else: eat early, eat plain, keep water close, swap menthol for glycerin and stop worrying about the milk in your tea. Your voice will thank you, and so will whoever’s editing the clicks out.

Sources: Lesley Childs, UT Southwestern Medical Center, “What to include in your ‘voice care lunchbox’ and what to leave out”; Pinnock C.B. and others, University of Adelaide, “Relationship between milk intake and mucus production in adult volunteers challenged with rhinovirus-2”, American Review of Respiratory Disease, 1990; Wüthrich B. and others, University Hospital Zurich, “Milk consumption does not lead to mucus production or occurrence of asthma”, Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 2005; Georgalas V.L. and others, Trinity College Dublin, “The Effects of Caffeine on Voice: A Systematic Review”, Journal of Voice, 2023; Lechien J.R., “Effectiveness of Diet Recommendations for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: A Systematic Review”, Journal of Voice, 2025.

Does milk make mucus?
