A friendly stranger has a well paid job, the script is short, the deadline is easy, and they’d love to send a check today. It feels like a break. It’s usually a trap, and it’s built to catch people who are new enough to be grateful for any booking.

This guide is for anyone with a demo online, whether you’ve been at it for ten years or ten days. It walks through how voice over scams actually run, why the money looks real right up until it doesn’t, the newer tricks that are after your voice rather than your bank balance, and what to do if you’ve already been caught.

The story always starts with a gift

The most common version is called the overpayment scam, and it has been doing the rounds in voice over for years. Doug Turkel, a commercial voice actor who wrote the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA) guide to spotting these, says the opening line often looks like this: “I have a $850 voice over (Assignment) for you.”

From there the story runs on rails. The “client” is keen, barely asks about your voice, and wants to pay up front. A check arrives, and it’s for more than the agreed fee. Sometimes they say it was a mistake. Sometimes they say the extra is for a studio, an engineer or “our approved vendor” who’ll supply equipment. Either way, they ask you to deposit it and send the difference on.

That’s the whole trick. The check is fake, the money you send is real, and the “vendor” is the scammer wearing a different hat. Turkel notes the money usually goes back “Often via wire transfer or money order, and sometimes by store gift card, making it nearly impossible to retrieve your money.”

What makes it work on smart people is that it borrows the shape of a real booking. Real clients do send scripts, real jobs do pay well, and real producers are sometimes in a hurry. The scam just bends each of those a few degrees too far.

© The Voice Realm

Why the money looks real for a while

Here’s the part that catches people out. You deposit the check, wait a day or two, and the money shows up in your balance. Surely that means it cleared?

It doesn’t. The US Federal Trade Commission explains it plainly: “By law, banks have to make deposited funds available quickly.” Seeing the money is not the same as the bank confirming the check is good. In the FTC’s words, “Fake checks can take weeks to be discovered and untangled.”

When the bank finally works out the check was counterfeit, it takes the full amount back out of your account. The money you sent on is long gone, and you owe the bank the difference. The FTC is blunt about it: “Even if you see the funds in your account, that doesn’t mean it’s a good check.”

That’s why scammers push so hard on speed. Turkel puts it this way: “They need for you to send them their profit before your bank flags the check as fake, which can take as little as a few days or as much as a few weeks.” Every “urgent” and “today please” in their messages is about beating that clock, not about their production schedule.

© The Voice Realm

The tells you’ll notice once you know them

You don’t need to be a detective. Most scam approaches give themselves away in the first two messages, and they tend to do it in the same few ways.

They want to talk about money, not the job. A real producer asks about your sound, your availability, maybe your rate for usage. Turkel’s guide points out that in these emails the “scammers are only interested in talking about the payment, and that there is zero talk about the gig.” No questions about tone, no direction, no audience. Just how and when they’ll pay you.

The email address doesn’t match the company. Some scammers borrow the name of a real business, even real staff names, to look legitimate. But because they don’t work there, the mail comes from a free personal account instead of the company’s own domain. Check the address, not the signature.

They want an “interview” somewhere odd. NAVA flags requests to connect “through messaging apps like Signal, Telegram, Skype, WhatsApp or Zoom.” A text-only chat on an encrypted app is a strange way to cast a voice. Real clients audition you, or they book you from your demo, and they’re happy to talk on the phone.

The words don’t fit the work. A “short commercial” that pays per finished hour, a script that runs to a single sentence, a fee that’s oddly precise for a job nobody has described. When the details don’t add up, that’s not a language barrier. It’s a story that was never about voice over.

None of these alone proves anything. Put two together and you can stop replying.

© The Voice Realm

The newer scam wants your voice, not your bank account

The overpayment trick is old. What’s newer is the approach that’s after audio. NAVA keeps a community list of reported approaches, and one recent entry sums it up in two short lines: “Trying to get audio data. Company is real, the reps reaching out are not.”

These look like ordinary casting calls. You’re asked to record a long custom script, often reading in lots of different emotions, sometimes with a promise of payment later. What they really want is a clean, varied recording of your voice that can be used to train a synthetic copy of it. Once that file is out of your hands, you can’t call it back.

Protect yourself the same way you’d protect any paid work. Keep custom auditions short. Read a sample, not a novel. Don’t send hours of audio to anyone you haven’t confirmed is who they say they are. And before you record anything for a real job, know exactly what the client can do with it; our guide to who owns a recording once the session’s over explains the license side in plain English.

© The Voice Realm

A third family of tricks reverses the money flow entirely: you’re “booked”, then asked to pay a fee before you can be paid. Community reports on the NAVA list include a demand that talent “pay for international verification” first. A real client never charges you to receive their money.

Before you deposit anything, run these checks

If a job feels too good, slow down and give it ten minutes of homework. Scams hate patience.

Four checks before a check

Find the company yourself. Look up its real website and phone number, not the ones in the email, and ask whether the person who contacted you works there.

Ask about the job. Request the full script, the usage, the deadline and who’s directing. A scammer goes vague or pushes back toward payment.

Refuse any overpayment. If a check arrives for more than the fee, don’t deposit it. Ask for a new one for the exact amount, or walk away.

Never pay to be paid. No verification fees, no vendor payments, no gift cards, ever.

Turkel’s guide boils all of it down to a single sentence worth taping to your monitor: “Never, NEVER send money to a client or for a client.” In more than thirty years of voicing, he writes, he’s never once needed to.

The FTC adds a rule for when the check is already sitting in your account. Never use money from a deposited check to buy gift cards, buy cryptocurrency or wire money to anyone who asks. Once it’s sent that way, the FTC says, “it’s like you’ve given them cash.”

© The Voice Realm

If you’ve already sent money

First, don’t be embarrassed. These schemes are written by people who do this all day, and they catch experienced professionals too. What matters now is speed.

Call your bank’s fraud line straight away. Tell them the check you deposited may be fake and that you sent money on. If the transfer hasn’t completed, they may be able to stop it.

If you paid with gift cards, call the card company. Have the card numbers and receipts ready. It’s a long shot, but the sooner they know, the better your chances.

Stop all contact. Scammers often come back with a second story: a “refund agent” or a “lawyer” who can recover your money for a fee. That’s the same people, back for more.

Report it. In the US, the FTC takes fake check reports, and its guide in the Sources below explains how. Elsewhere, your national fraud reporting service will want to know. It also helps other voice actors to report the approach itself: NAVA keeps its list of known scams up to date from talent reports, so the next person who gets the same email can search the wording and find it.

Keep everything: the emails, the chat screenshots, the check, the deposit slip. Your bank and the police will both want them.

Real clients look a bit boring, and that’s good news

Once you’ve seen a few scams, a real booking starts to look almost dull by comparison. There’s a script with actual words in it. There’s a question about your read. There’s a deadline that makes sense, a fee that matches the usage, and someone who answers a phone.

Money only ever travels one way: from the client to you. You send an invoice when the work is approved, and our guide to what a proper voice over invoice should say will help you get that part right. For bigger jobs there’s paperwork, and it’s worth knowing what to look for before you sign a voice contract, because a real client is glad to put the terms in writing and a scammer never is.

Working through a casting marketplace takes most of this off your plate. On The Voice Realm, clients pay the site and talent are paid from there, so nobody should ever ask you to send money anywhere. If a “client” tries to move you off the site and onto a private chat with a check in the post, you already know what you’re looking at. You’ll find real work, posted by real people, on the voice over jobs board.

Trust your gut, read the address, and keep your money and your voice where they belong.

Sources: Doug Turkel for the National Association of Voice Actors, <a
